University of South Alabama athletics competes at the NCAA Division I level and fields eight men's and nine women's athletic programs. South Alabama is a charter member
of the Sun Belt Conference, with a multisport history of excellence in competition and in the classroom.

Created in 2009, the football program competes in the Football Bowl Subdivision and participates in the College Football Playoff. In addition to playing a highly competitive Sun Belt Conference schedule, the program plays non-conference opponents from the SEC, the ACC, Big 12, MAC, Mountain West, AAC and C-USA. In 2014, USA earned its first football bowl appearance, in the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl.

The men's and women's basketball programs play home games on campus in
the beautiful 10,000-seat Mitchell Center. Other on-campus venues include Stanky Field (baseball), Jaguar Field (softball), The Cage (soccer), Jaguar Track (track and field), Jaguar Gym (Volleyball) and the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Courts (men's and women's tennis).

A number of South Alabama student-athletes have gone on to notable professional careers. They include baseball's Luis Gonzalez, Juan Pierre, David Freese,
Jon Lieber, Marlon Anderson and Adam Lind, basketball's Terry
Catledge, and golf's Heath Slocum. Hannah Campbell was the third selection in the 2014 National Professional Fastpitch League.
