Whether you are just starting out or wanting to explore new career paths, the Department of Leadership and Teacher Education has options for you. With an education degree from the University of South Alabama, you have opportunities to interact and learn with peers and educators on campus, online, and onsite in local schools.

As part of our mission of teaching, research, and service, the Department of Leadership and Teacher Education offers instruction and training for undergraduate and graduate students who are seeking certification to prepare them for professional responsibilities in P-12 schools and higher education. 

Undergraduate programs include specialization in K-6 Teacher Education, Secondary Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, and Special Education. 

The Department also offers instruction to graduate students in Elementary, Early Childhood, English for Speakers of Other Languages, Art, Reading, Teacher Leader, Foreign Languages, Special Education, and Secondary Education in Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, and Sciences, as well as Instructional Leadership. We also offer the Early Childhood Studies and Educational Studies programs that lead to B.S. degrees through non-certification routes.

Our doctoral program in Educational Leadership offers two tracks--one with a focus in P-12 education and the other with a focus in higher education.

Dr. Maulding-GreenCongratulations to Dr. Wanda Maulding-Green on her publication with Dr. Ed Leonard the manuscript "Leadership Intelligence: The Journey to Your True North."  As the publisher says, "

Much like Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences, Maulding-Green and Leonard have, in Leadership Intelligence: The Journey to Your True North, postulated a theory regarding the age old question, ‘are leaders born or are leaders made?’ This theory is predicated on the idea that there is a genetic predisposition toward leadership via the vehicle of imprinting.

The five critical factors which undergird the tenets of Leadership Intelligence, are delineated and developed through the lens of the soft skills of a leader. There is further clarification as to why some leaders seem to have ‘a greater intensity’ of these factors than their peers.

To aid the reader in relating to the theory, a conceptual model based on a GPS is threaded throughout each chapter interweaving both examples and understandable content. The model relates keeping the organization moving in a true north fashion. The final chapters reveal how a leader can develop or enhance these skills and how he/she can avoid leadership derailment, due to neglecting them."
