INSTRUCTIONS ON USING
THE BIBLIOGRAPHY
Two search methods are available:
(1) Advanced
Search (the
default choice) which allows searches using a combination of fields (Boolean
terms) .
(2) Quick Search, which can
be reached by clicking the appropriate button. It searches only the
fields Author, Keyword, Periodical, and Publication date.
The results of the search are displayed in a list with basic
bibliographical information in MLA style (Author, Title, Publication
information). To view a complete reference, click on the
Full Record icon to the left of the listed item.
Individual references can also be marked in the box and exported .
The maximum number of individual records that can be displayed is 350.
The name of the database, listed in the "Search" window at the top of the Bibliography page, indicates the last upload date in the form YYMMDD. Only the latest version to be uploaded can be searched at present.
Reference Web Poster also has a HELP
button which may be clicked to gain access to additional
information while using the program.
SEARCHABLE FIELDS
The following fields can be specified using the Advanced Search
. Hints for these fields and peculiarities associated with them
are noted:
Author.(or Editor) Given in the order Lastname,Firstname.
For some reason RWP omits the space after the comma. Therefore it is
best to search using only the last name, or to make sure that you also
omit the space when employing the first name as well. In this field
wildcard searches are possible by typing in only the first few
letters of the last name. Ben
results in works authored by Benjamin
and
Benn. When searches are
conducted on the author field, RWP also finds
entries in the Editor and Series Editor fields that contain the name.
Keyword. A list of frequently used Keywords may be consulted through the Keyword link. So far, only German keywords have been added to the references: the list gives the German translation for English words that you may be seeking. The list is not exclusive, and since some references were imported from other sites, English keywords and terms in other formats can be found occasionally as well. For wildcard searches, only the beginning of the Keyword need be typed: a search for Rezeption finds references with both Rezeption and Rezeptionsästhetik. Since this is one of the indexed fields, it is necessary to start with the first character of the term: numerous entries are found when searching for Lasker , but none are found for Schüler. Unlike Quick Search, Advanced Search literally searches for the quotation marks.
Publication Date (Year). To search for entries from a single year, type only that year. To search for entries published between a range of years type the beginning and end years joined by a hyphen, e.g. 1925-1970.
Periodical. Used when searching by journal title.
Reference ID. A number assigned to a reference when it is first placed into EndNote. Of statistical value only, it is probably not useful to most users.
ALL INDEXED FIELDS. The above
five fields are considered by RWP as indexed fields and can be searched
all at once by choosing
this category. For any of these fields a term must be listed starting
with the first character, as described under Keywords (above).
ALL NON-INDEXED FIELDS. This category allows one to search the following fields as a group.
Individual searches on these fields
are not allowed. Unlike searches on indexed fields, one does not have
to start at the beginning of the phrase when searching. Thus a search
of "All non-indexed fields" for Klavier also finds titles that
contain the term Mein blaues Klavier.
Title. Used to search for the title of a reference, or
a portion of the title.
Abstract. Eventually we hope to annotate the Bibliography by
providing more information in this category. At the moment coverage is
incomplete.
Language (User Def 1). The language in which a reference was
published is entered here. Names of the languages are given in German.
A list of translations can be found at the Keywords
link. To search for example for all references in English to the lyric
poetry, enter Lyrik under "Keyword" AND Englisch under
"All non-indexed fields."
Type of Work (User Def 2). The type of
reference is listed here, e.g. scholarly literature, theater
review, thesis, electronic
source, etc. These terms are all entered in German, and a list of
equivalents may found at the Keywords link.
A search that combines a request for Englisch and
Primärliteratur (or Übersetzung)
in "All non-indexed fields" could be used, for example, to find
translations of works by Lasker-Schüler into English.
Reprint. If a work has been reprinted elsewhere at a later
date, this information is contained here.
ISBN.
Web/URLs. These should appear as hot links in the display
format.
Notes. May contain internal remarks for the bibliographers or
additional information about the reference itself, often taken over
when a reference has been imported from another library.
GERMAN AND OTHER
FOREIGN CHARACTERS
Searches are not case specific, althought the search engine does
understand only the German characters if those are used in search
terms. In other words, Lasker-Schüler is understood, but not Lasker-Schuler .
Characters from other languages may be entered by pressing the Alt-key
while entering the following codes (or by copying and pasting):
ä 132 ö
148 ü 129
Ä 142 Ö
153 Ü 154
ß 225
é 130 è
138 ê 136
á 160 ô
147
EXPORTING
RECORDS
1. Mark the references from the generated list that you wish to export.
2. Click on the Export button
3. Choose one of the 3 options. Most users will probably want the RIS
option.
4. Click on "Save this file to disk" when the download option appears.
Choose a name and location in which to save the file.
5. Start your own database program (e.g. EndNote) and follow its
instructions for importing the file. If it can read .isa files, it
should be able to import them. Macintosh EndNote users (through
Version 7.x) will have to download
the Endnote Import Filter RIS (hqx format) and install it in their
"Filters" folder.
Since the exported records go into an ASCII text file, the
foreign characters are unfortunately not retained. Entries will have to
be cleaned up by the individual user. We beg your patience while we
look for a solution.
A maximum of 50 records can be exported.
