Using Keywords  
Successful searches will most likely occur through the use of keywords , which are for the most part listed in German in the keyword field in the References themselves. Most of these keywords were added by the bibliographers, although others were taken over as a result of other searches. Thus English terms are occasionally found, as well as items in other formats. Eventually dual sets of keywords in both languages will be included with each entry. For now, English-speaking researchers should consult the list below to locate the German term. More keywords occur in the references than are included on the list below, which contains the ones most frequently encountered. For more details, see the Instructions page, especially the "Searchable Fields" section, since the software does not understand terms that are not entered consistent with its peculiarities.

  It is often useful to combine a keyword with other search terms, such as type of work or language. For example, to find all dissertations that deal with Die Wupper, the user would search for "Die Wupper" under Keywords AND "Dissertation" under All non-indexed fields (it is contained in the field labeled "User Def 2").  An English list of the Types of Work follows the Keyword section below. (Many references contain more than one Type of Work).

Titles of works by Lasker-Schüler: Search without punctuation, but include the definite article. e.g. Abschied; Die Wupper
Names of people:  These are given in the form Benn Gottfried 1886-1956. It is best to search by last name only until all entries have been consistently entered.
Place names: e.g. Jerusalem; Wuppertal; Zürich; Israel; Schweiz
Other names: e.g. Der blaue Reiter; Der Sturm <Zeitschrift>; Living Theater
Names from Lasker-Schüler's works: e.g.  Jussuf; Joseph; Theben

Type of Work: English translations of the German terms
The data field Type of Work can be searched under All indexed fields. Many entries have more than one type of work listed. The term Primärliteratur [primary literature] is used only for works by Lasker-Schüler herself. It may be supplemented by other terms, such as Übersetzung [translation]. The term Sekundärliteratur [secondary literature] is sometimes found in the other entries, but searches should be conducted using one of the more specific terms below. The term Fachliteratur is the most common term used for scholarly literature about Lasker-Schüler and her works.
