In accordance with University policy regarding COVID-19 and to ensure the safety of our staff and volunteers, we will not be having any volunteer digs or lab opportunities until further notice. Have you ever wondered what it's like to be an archaeologist?

The Center for Archaeological Studies at the University of South Alabama has an active program for people in the Mobile area who are interested in volunteering on an archaeological excavation or in our laboratory. Please read the following information before signing up.

Activities for Volunteers

Excavate at local sites with professional archaeologists. Washing, sorting, labeling, and cataloging artifacts in our laboratory.

Requirements

Most excavation projects do not require that volunteers have any previous experience. Minors must have written permission from a parent or legal guardian, and be accompanied by an adult. Our ability to accept volunteers often depends on the logistical aspects of a project, such as the landowner's permission or how many people are needed to complete an excavation. You will be required to sign Hold Harmless agreements for the University and private landowners. Excavation is the most popular volunteer activity and it is seasonal, so a waiting list may be kept. Most of our time is spent processing and analyzing artifacts in the laboratory on the main campus of the University.

When we have your name and other information, we will call you when your help is needed. Orientation to excavation or lab work will be given by staff archaeologists.
