University of South Alabama Creates Office of Military Services
Posted on September 3, 2024
The University of South Alabama is expanding its support for active-duty members of the U.S. military, their dependents and veterans through the new Office of Military Services. The office is led by David Blair, a retired U.S. Army sergeant major with more than 18 years of experience leading similar programs at the University of Alabama and Mississippi State University. Blair joined USA on Sept. 1.
“We have more than 115 degree programs at South — both on-campus and online — and are committed to providing the best support possible to the military community so they can access these educational opportunities,” said Dr. Andi Kent, executive vice president and provost. “David Blair has a stellar reputation and is well respected in the military community. He knows how to navigate the complex world of military benefits, and we look forward to supporting these students in unprecedented ways under his leadership.”
In addition to the GI Bill, there are many other scholarships available for active-duty personnel, retirees and their dependents, including USA’s Heroes Scholarship. South’s Office of Military Services also will provide comprehensive support for the many other education-related programs provided by federal and state governments.
“It is critically important for the University of South Alabama to enhance our efforts to help the men and women who serve our country, their dependents and veterans,” said USA President Jo Bonner. “The Gulf Coast has a long history of being home to, and providing support for, many service branches, and we are proud to continue this effort as the Flagship of the Gulf Coast.”
As part of his new role at South, Blair will travel to military installations in the region to establish stronger ties with the University. “I’m excited to join South at a time when its reputation is growing and look forward to spreading the message that this is a military friendly university,” said Blair.
The Office of Military Services will become a one-stop shop for all military affiliated students, where all programs and services are focused on easing the transition from military life to college life and creating an inviting and welcoming experience for our veterans, service members and their families.
