  Department of Drama & Theatre Arts: Technical Design and Production
 
The University of South Alabama Department of Theatre & Dance invites applications for a full-time (nine-month), tenure-track Assistant Professor of Theatre position, specializing in Technical Design and Production, beginning August 15, 2027. We seek a dynamic artist-educator with primary expertise in scenic design, lighting design, or a closely related area of technical theatre. We seek an individual who is excited to expand their skills within a collaborative, growing Theatre and Dance department. An earned terminal degree in Theatre (M.F.A or Ph.D. in a closely related field) is required for this tenure-track appointment. M.F.A. applicants near completion of their degree or ABDs currently near the completion of their degree are welcome to apply, but an earned M.F.A. or Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment.
 
Applicants should have experience in one or more of the following areas: scenic design, lighting design, or technical production at the collegiate, secondary, and/or professional levels. Evidence of effective teaching in theatre in your field of expertise and commitment to equitable and inclusive pedagogical practices that support learners of all backgrounds. Candidates who demonstrate versatility, collaborative spirit, and interest in cross-disciplinary growth are strongly encouraged to apply.
 
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates with any of the following are particularly encouraged to apply:
●      Experience designing or assisting in multiple technical/design areas (e.g., scenic, lighting, projection, sound).
●      Familiarity with industry-standard software (e.g., Vectorworks, CAD programs, QLab, light or scenic visualization tools & OSHA standards).
●      Experience in shop supervision, mentoring student designers and student production crews.
●      Evidence of creative or professional activity in the candidate’s area of specialty.
●      Engagement in professional organizations or continued artistic practice.
●      Experience contributing to curriculum development and departmental recruitment efforts.
●      A demonstrated collaborative work ethic, strong communication skills, and dedication to student-centered learning.
 
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
●      Teaching courses for majors, minors, and non-majors, including Introduction to Theatre and classes within the candidate’s technical/design specialization.
●      Designing for the department’s four annual stage productions annually.
●      Mentoring and supervising student designers, technicians, and production crews.
●      Contributing to ongoing recruitment efforts and student engagement initiatives.
●      Participating in departmental service, curriculum development, and program assessment.
●      Supporting a safe, inclusive, and collaborative production environment.
 
About the Department
The Department of Theatre & Dance is entering an exciting period of growth and restructuring as we refine our curriculum and strengthen interdisciplinary training. Our program emphasizes a multi-disciplinary approach to theatre education, grounded in both artistic rigor and hands-on production experience. We produce four main stage shows per year and assist with various inter-departmental events across campus, providing robust opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and artistic exploration.
