Teaching Philosophy:

I strive to create an environment that is inclusive and engaging where professionals learn and grow as instructional leaders. I am committed to challenging, supporting, and helping students grow to become effective leaders who thrive within their organizations. I believe students learn most deeply when they collaborate with their peers and connect academic theories to their own professional beliefs. I find value in building relationships and increasing dialogue to create opportunities for students to learn. By doing such, I aspire to create a learning environment where students learn and practice being collaborative, ethical, and reflective educational leaders.

Research:

Dr. Charles’ research is centered around K-12 leadership, specifically democratic leadership, and exploring the relationships between democratic community, teacher morale, commitment, and their intent to stay in public schools in Alabama. She has spent some time researching democratic communities in public K-12 schools and how collaboration and shared decision-making involves everyone within schools to create a collaborative culture and sense of belonging for everyone.

Outreach:

Dr. Charles is deeply rooted in community service and engagement through various organizations she is a member. She also serves as a member of Bishop State Community College General Education & Instruction Advisory Board. Dr. Charles also spends some time mentoring educators as well as students. Dr. Charles aspires to partner with K-12 schools in the surrounding areas to collaborate regarding professional development, recruitment, research grants, and various ways to support.

Biography:

Dr. Charles has spent over a decade in K-12 schools as a secondary English teacher, instructional coach, and an elementary, middle, and high school administrator. She has worked in diverse school settings across Alabama, including rural, urban, suburban, and magnet schools. Dr. Charles earned a Bachelor of Science in English Language Arts, a Master of Arts in Teaching English Language Arts, both from the University of West Alabama, a Certification in Instructional Leadership from Auburn University at Montgomery, an Educational Specialist in Administration of Elementary and Secondary Education, and a Ph.D. in Administration of Elementary and Secondary Education, both from Auburn University. Outside of work, Dr. Charles enjoys attending concerts, spending time with her family, attending collegiate and professional athletic events, and scrapbooking.
