Accelerated BSN Pathway

The Accelerated BSN program does not follow the University of South Alabama Academic Calendar.  Students beginning the Accelerated BSN program in the Spring semester will start classes the first week of January. Students beginning the Accelerated BSN program in the Fall semester will start classes in mid-July. Attendance on the first day of classes is required to begin the Accelerated BSN program.

Students enrolled in the Accelerated BSN program may be required to complete more than twenty (20) hours per week during clinical courses. Thus, full-time employment and employment during weekdays is highly discouraged due to the rigorous accelerated schedule required to complete the program.

Admission Criteria

1. Completion of a prior bachelor’s degree (with degree posted to official transcript).
2. Accelerated BSN applicants with an earned prior bachelor’s degree must have completed all 26 credit hours of prerequisite course work (as listed on this website) prior to the semester of admission. Prerequisites must be taken at a regionally accredited school. For second degree seeking students, all 26 credit hours of prerequisites must be completed or in progress prior to application deadline. Admission is contingent upon the completion of any outstanding prerequisite courses
3. A final minimum prerequisite GPA of 3.0 (“A”=4.0) is required upon admission.
4. Minimum grade of “C” in all prerequisite courses. 
5. Be in good standing within the University of South Alabama which requires a university GPA of 2.0.

Application Procedures

Applications are reviewed carefully to determine that students have satisfied all pre-nursing requirements, and satisfy the requirements of emotional and physical health, conduct, scholastic achievement, and aptitude for nursing. The College of Nursing Admissions Committee and the Dean of the College of Nursing reserve the right to select the applicants best qualified for and most likely to succeed in the study of nursing. Failure to comply with legal, moral, and legislative standards for licensure to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Alabama merits immediate dismissal from the nursing program.

Step One – Apply to the University of South Alabama

1. Apply to the University of South Alabama. Complete application to the University of South Alabama. A Jag number and Jagmail account are provided upon admission to the University.   
2. Official transcripts from all colleges and schools the student has attended are required by the Registrar’s Office.
3. Transfer of credits must be approved by the Registrar’s Office prior to applying to the College of Nursing. Students are responsible for contacting the Registrar’s Office for transfer evaluation.
4. A Jag number and Jagmail account are required before advancing to Step Two: Apply to the College of Nursing

Step Two – Apply to the College of Nursing

6. Admission to the Professional Component of Nursing in the USA College of Nursing requires the submission of an Accelerated BSN Supplemental Application. Application must be submitted to the College of Nursing by the college’s application deadline. Payment of the $50 non-refundable application fee via debit or credit card is required for supplemental application processing.
7. Unofficial transcripts from other institutions showing in-progress courses must be emailed to conaccbsn@southalabama.edu by the application deadline.
8. For second degree seeking students, all 26 credit hours of prerequisites must be completed or in progress prior to application deadline.

Prior Nursing Students

8. Students who have attended a Nursing program at another school are also required to provide the following to the College of Nursing.
   1. Letter of Good Standing (verifying student was in good moral, ethical, and legal standing with no previous disciplinary action) from the nursing Program, signed by the Nursing Administrator of the program and emailed directly from the institution to conaccbsn@southalabama.edu.
9. Students dismissed from a previous, non-USA nursing program may be considered as follows:

1. 1. Re-admission will only be considered for the Traditional BSN program
   2. Students will compete for a seat among all other applicants to the program. Priority is given to current University of South Alabama students.
   3. The college does not accept transfer of nursing courses from previous nursing programs.

* Students who apply for admission to Traditional BSN with an overall GPA of 3.75 may be offered an invitation for admission to the Accelerated BSN pathway based on availability. The CON Advising Department will contact students who meet this criterion after they are admitted to the Traditional BSN program.

Admission and initial registration is contingent on completion of the following requirements:

1. Acceptance Packet
2. Negative Drug Screen
3. Acceptable Background Check
4. Compliance Tracking Package in Complio

Notification of missing documents will be sent to your Jagmail account provided on your application. Only students who have successfully completed the Acceptance Packet in its entirety, have a negative drug screen and acceptable background check, and completed all required portions of the Compliance Tracking Package will be permitted to register for classes. If a student is unable to meet the initial registration requirements, contact conaccbsn@southalabama.edu.

All prerequisite coursework must be completed prior to admission to the accelerated nursing pathway. Enrollment at the University of South Alabama does not assure the student admission to the accelerated Professional Component.

Your admission is contingent upon the Transfer Credit Articulation completed by the Office of Admissions at the time of acceptance to USA.

Students can use the USA Transfer Evaluation System to assess which credits earned at their current or former school may transfer to the University of South Alabama.  This is an unofficial course evaluation.

BSN Accelerated Spring Admission Schedule_Revised June 2019

Please note the following test, titers, and immunizations are required for admission into the Nursing Program. It is very important to start working on these requirements early to allow time to complete all of them by the deadline that will be included in admission packets.

• Two Hepatitis B adult immunizations to start clinical rotations; Third dose and follow-up titer required to continue.
• Proof of two MMR immunizations or titer 
• Positive Varicella titer; If negative, a booster immunization is required.
• Flu Vaccine
• TB Test (Initial 2-step PPD test or blood test {Quantiferon Gold test or T-spot] 1-step PPD test or blood test annually thereafter)
• Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (TDaP) Vaccine

*Hepatitis B immunizations may take up to 6 months to obtain the full adult series of immunizations as well as another month after the last immunization to have the titer completed. As defined by the CDC, adult immunization schedules refer to adults aged 19 years or older.

Students accepted into this BSN program in the College of Nursing are required to complete all Compliance Tracking Package requirements as listed on the Health Requirements Webpage.  All requirements should be completed no later than one month prior to the first day of classes for the professional component.  Students are not required to order a Complio account until they have been accepted into the professional component. 

Accelerated BSN Pathway students are eligible for on-campus university housing. Note that on-campus university housing operates on the University of South Alabama Academic Calendar and not on the Accelerated BSN academic calendar. So, if you have been accepted to the Accelerated BSN program, wish to live in on-campus university housing, and need to move in before the official published on-campus university house residence hall opening date (University of South Alabama Academic Calendar), contact USA Housing directly to schedule an early move-in. More information on USA Housing's move-in can be found HERE. Prorated housing fees or an early arrival charge may apply if an early move-in is approved. If you desire to live in on-campus university housing, you are encouraged to apply for on-campus university housing as soon as possible and contact USA Housing to determine your move-in date options.
